Thanksgiving – A Time to Experiment?
‘X’ Marks the spot! Buried treasure in the sky? It’s all I could think of when I saw this just in time to snap a quick picture. Isn’t the Internet like a treasure chest of information? Some baubles are cheap plastic, but some are real treasures.
Thanksgiving Dinner is not a time for experiments. If you want to add a new recipe to the table, try it out first instead of waiting for ‘the’ day. And, when it comes to recipes, trust those product websites for no-fail recipes. They have devoted many hours in their test kitchens before publishing a recipe. Trust your blogger friends too. We’ve likely served the dish to our family and friends before posting.
This year I’m adding Classic Baked Corn Pudding. It’s a recipe from Betty Crocker and I tried out out last weekend. It’s absolutely delicious!

I can't tell you how many times I have placed an empty but dirty casserole dish in the oven because of lack of counter space and forgotten it - and then turned the oven on to preheat for another meal. Ugh. It's my worst kitchen habit! Hopefully someday I'll have a kitchen with LOTS of counter space :)

Love your blog. Worst thing to clean is the brownie pan with the insert to make individual brownies. Even after soaking, it never gets completely clean in the dishwasher. Sheila

Cascade Complete® All-in-1 ActionPacs™ & Gift Card Giveaway
I grew up with a manual dishwasher. If you’re scratching your head, a manual dishwasher means we washed dishes by hand! Maybe that’s why I’ve always been a firm believer in soaking dishes. I love baking, but I really hate doing the dishes. When MyBlogSpark gave me the opportunity to take the 24 Hour Cascade Challenge, I had to give it a try. P&G, through MyBlogSpark, sent me a Cascade Complete All-in-1 ActionPacs kit.
The kit included:
- A beautiful Corningware baking dish with glass lid for cooking & a plastic lid for storing or potlucks
- 6 trial packs of Cascade Complete All-In-1 Action Pacs – one to use for my challenge and 5 for to share with you
- Wal-Mart Gift Card ($15) for one of my lucky readers
That’s the easy part. The hard part was the challenge. I do not mean it was difficult to cook, but it was difficult to resist the temptation to soak the dish. My instructions were:
- Bake a Blueberry Cobbler
- Set the empty baking dish out for 24 hours
- Without rinsing, put it in the dishwasher with Cascade Complete
No rinsing! No soaking! No way! But, I did it. (By the way, the cobbler was delicious!). The dish looked pretty sad the next day – all empty, dirty and abandoned. I had blueberry stain nightmares. I had my doubts, but the dish came out squeaky clean! Will I rinse in the future? Yes, it’s habit. But, it’s nice to know I don’t always have to if I forget and leave a dish out overnight.
How about you? Do you want to take the challenge too?
It’s easy, but you do have to leave a comment on this post. Maybe you could tell me about your dirtiest dish and how hard you had to scrub for it to come clean. If you’re a follower of this blog, you get an extra entry.
The prize? I have five trial packs of Cascade Complete All-In-1 Action Pacs to give away and one lucky reader will receive a $15 Wal-Mart gift card.
Hurry though as this giveaway will end May 25, 2011 at midnight

Cinnamon Butter & Giveaway
One of my favorite memories as a child is watching Mom make buttermilk biscuits. Almost every Sunday morning, Mom would scoop up the flour and start from scratch. They were perfect. Of all the things that I learned from Mom, I never have mastered the art of a perfect biscuit. Oh, Mom used canned biscuits too and we considered them a treat. She’d flatten them out, fill them with home-made apple pie filling and make the best fried apple pies. Add a some ice cream, and you’re in heaven.
When Pillsbury first began making frozen biscuits to bake at home, I jumped on the bandwagon. At last, I could get the taste of home-made biscuits without the fuss. And the best part? I could cook as many as I wanted. If I only needed two biscuits, then that’s all I needed to pull out of the freezer. Anyone knows, there’s no such thing as making a ‘small’ batch of homemade biscuits!
As you can imagine, I was very excited to hear about the new Pillsbury® Grands!® Mini Biscuits. These little biscuits are just the right size for little appetites or big appetizers! Love coupons? Click here so you can save $1.00 on the purchase of any Frozen Pillsbury Grands! Biscuits.
.
Through MyBlogSpark, Pillsbury sent me information and a Pillsbury Grands! Mini Biscuits prize pack that included a coupon for a free package of biscuits, a $15 gift card, a biscuit basket, a butter dish and spreader. The best part? Pillsbury, through MyBlogSpark, is providing me with an additional prize pack for one of you!
What’s your favorite use for Pillsbury® Grands!®? Do you use them in a recipe? I love cooking home-made pot pies topped with a biscuit instead of pie crust. Topping a biscuit with a little cinnamon, sugar, and butter before baking makes a wonderful dessert. Or, try this yummy recipe for cinnamon butter. The maple syrup adds just a taste of Fall!
CINNAMON BUTTER
.
1 cup butter
1/4 cup powdered sugar
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
.
Allow butter to soften at room temperature. Beat butter, sugar, syrup and cinnamon together until well blended. Store in air-tight container and refrigerate for at least an hour before using.
MyBlogSpark and Pillsbury want you to enjoy the new Pillsbury® Grands!® Mini Biscuits too. To enter, just leave a comment on this blog & tell me your favorite use for Pillsbury biscuits. If you’re a follower of this blog, you are automatically entered, but you’ll get an extra entry if you leave a comment. Hurry though, this giveaway ends October 20, 2010 at midnight.

Game Day Sliders & Refried Beans

Are you ready for the BIG game? Even if you’re not a football fan, I bet you like the Superbowl commercials! And, how about the food??? Every year, I try to come up with something a little different. So, I was very happy when Old El Paso provided me with a ‘Tackle the Taste’ gift pack through MyBlogSpark. Not only did I receive Old El Paso Green Chiles to try, I also received this great serving platter and table decorations. I’ve actually used Old El Paso Green Chiles for years in a lot of my recipes. But, I decided to try something a little different this time.
I love the idea of ‘sliders’. This recipe incorporates all the ease of my favorite meatloaf recipe. And, Old El Paso Green Chiles gave it an extra kick.
GAME DAY SLIDERS
.
1 pound ground chuck
1 can Old El Paso Green Chiles (4.5 oz)
1/2 cup ketchup
1 small onion, chopped finely
1 cup crushed saltine crackers
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/8 teaspoon salt
.
Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees. Combine all ingredients and form into small patties, about two and a half inches in diameter. Heat a small amount of oil in a non-stick skillet over medium high heat. Brown patties quickly on both sides. Remove to an oven-proof casserole dish. Bake 15 minutes at 400 degrees. Serve on small rolls.
I also decided to add something extra to my homemade refried bean recipe. I’ve used dark red kidney beans for years to make refried beans. I love the flavor they give. I kept my recipe the same and added Old El Paso Green Chiles. The results were terrific. I’ll definitely be doing this again.
REFRIED BEANS
.
1 can dark red kidney beans (do not drain)
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 can Old El Paso Green Chiles (4.5 oz)
.
Combine beans, water and garlic powder in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Continue to boil approximately 10 minutes, or until most of the liquid has cooked down and beans are soft. You will need to stir the beans once in a while to keep from sticking. Remove beans to a boil and mash to desired consistency. Add chiles and stir well.
How would you use Old El Paso Green Chiles to spice up your recipe?
Old El Paso, through MyBlogSpark, has provided an additional gift pack to give away. Leave a comment for a chance to win your very own Old El Paso “Tackle the Taste” gift pack. If you’re a follower of this blog, you are automatically entered. Feel free to leave a comment for an extra entry! Hurry though, because this offer will end on January 27, 2010.
